Hindu Ceremony
The reception came before the ceremony in this Hindu wedding, a rich blend of traditional ritual and modern revelry. Ken first photographed the multicultural reception, held at night at the Joaquin Miller Community Center and featuring a West African band. The next morning, he was on full alert at 8:00 sharp for the ceremony, which took place at Berkeley’s Café de la Paz. Lying on the floor of the cramped banquet room to get the best angle on the festivities, Ken captured the ancient rituals and the participants in their exquisite silk saris and robes. The groom pledged to treat all younger women as daughters, all older women as mothers, and all women his age as sisters; the Hindu priest then “tied the knot” of the couple’s two shawls. Afterward, the wedding party of 160 enjoyed a Latin cuisine breakfast.
